Commissioning of Unit-2 of KNPP
The Unit-2 of Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant is
under commissioning. Various systems and equipment are being commissioned as
per commissioning plan.
The safety of Kudankulam reactors has been reviewed in detail by the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board and all activities have been carried out strictly in accordance with their clearances. While no experts have noted any safety concerns, some individuals and groups have raised apprehensions about safety of the plant. These are being addressed through a public outreach programme adopting a multipronged approach.
The balance activities are being expedited to ensure early operationalisation of the unit.

Amendment in Atomic Energy Act
The Government has amended sections 2 and 14 of the
Atomic Energy Act, 1962 through the Atomic Energy (Amendment) Bill, 2015, which
would enable Nuclear Power Corporation of India (NPCIL) to form joint venture
companies with other Indian PSUs to meet the additional funding requirements
for further expansion of our nuclear power programme, while simultaneously
exercising Government control over such joint venture companies. The said Bill
was passed by Parliament in the Winter Session of 2015 and enacted on
31.12.2015.
The security of nuclear power plants is governed by detailed codes and guides prescribed by Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB). AERB has rigorous process for reviewing safety and security aspects of nuclear power projects through multi-tier reviews, apart from periodic regulatory inspections, to ensure adherence to these requirements.

Shri K. N. Vyas takes over as Director, BARC
Shri K. N. Vyas, Distinguished
Scientist and Associate Director, Reactor Projects Group of the Bhabha Atomic
Research Centre (BARC) took over yesterday as Director, BARC from Dr. Sekhar
Basu, Chairman, Atomic Energy Commission and Secretary to the Government of
India, Department of Atomic Energy.
Shri Vyas graduated from the 22nd batch of the BARC Training School and joined Fuel Design & Development Section of Reactor Engineering Division of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre. During the past 36 years, Shri Vyas has gained a vast experience in design and analysis of nuclear reactor fuels. Subsequently, as Head, Reactor Projects Division, he has also worked for design and analysis of reactor systems. He has worked extensively in thermal hydraulics and stress analysis of critical reactor core components. Shri Vyas has also participated in design & analysis of the Test Blanket Module planned to be installed in ITER, France.
Shri Vyas has been conferred several awards, which include Indian Nuclear Society Outstanding Service Award 2011, Homi Bhabha Science and Technology Award 2006, DAE Awards in the years 2007, 2008, 2012 and 2013. He is also a Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineers.
