Import of Coal
Import of Coal
As per CCO reports, during April-November 2015, the import of coal was 127.52 Mte as compared to 137.61 Mte in the corresponding period of 2014-15 showing a fall of 7.3%. This was stated by Sh. Piyush Goyal, Minister of State (IC) for Power, Coal & New and Renewable Energy in a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha today. This slowdown in import is largely due to the fact that coal production by Coal India Ltd. (CIL) registered a growth of 8.8% during April-November, 2015 over the same period in the previous year. The country-wise import of coal during the last five years is given as below:-

Effectiveness of Measures by Bureau of Energy Efficiency
The following measures initiated by Bureau of Energy Efficiency have yielded tangible results in the field of energy efficiency and contribute significantly in achieving the vision of 24 x 7 power to all households in the country through resultant savings in energy consumption:
(i) Prescribing reduction in specific energy consumption norms for energy intensive industries notified as designated consumers, under Perform, Achieve, Trade (PAT) Scheme.
(ii) Star labeling of 21 appliances for improved energy efficiency.
(iii) Fuel efficiency standards prescribed for passengers cars to reduce fuel consumption.
(iv) Energy Conservation Building Codes (ECBC) formulated for energy efficiency improvement in commercial buildings.
(v) Demonstration projects on Demand Side Management (DSM) in Municipal, Household, Agriculture and Small & Medium Enterprises (SME) sectors for reducing energy consumption in these sectors.
(vi) Prescribing Design Guidelines for Energy Efficient Multi-Storey Residential Buildings.
(vii) Enabling investment in energy efficiency projects through innovative financing mechanisms.
(viii) Promotion of energy efficient LED lamps through Domestic Efficient Lighting Programme (DELP) & Street Lighting National Programme (SLNP), through which about 7.5 crore household LED bulbs are already distributed under DELP.
(ix) Nationwide campaign for energy conservation.
The energy saving achieved through the above initiatives is about 83 billion units. This was stated by Sh. Piyush Goyal, Minister of State (IC) for Power, Coal & New and Renewable Energy in a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha today.

An update on ongoing electrification process
In view of the Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi’s address to nation, on Independence Day, Government of India has decided to electrify remaining 18,452 un-electrified villages within 1000 days i.e. by 01st May, 2018. The project has been taken on mission mode and strategy for electrification consists of squeezing the implementation schedule to 12 months and also dividing village electrification process in 12 Stage milestones with defined timelines for monitoring.
During 2015-16, 6493 villages have been electrified till date. Out of remaining 11959 villages, 8219 villages are to be electrified through grid, 3267 villages are to be electrified through off- grid where grid solutions are out of reach due to geographical barriers and 473 villages are to be electrified by State Govt own. Total 1654 villages were electrified during April 2015 to 14th Aug 2015 and after taking initiative by Government of India for taking it on mission mode, 4839 additional villages have been electrified from 15thAugust 2015 to 13th March 2016. In order to expedite the progress further, a close monitoring is being done through Gram Vidyut Abhiyanta (GVA) and various actions are also being taken on regular basis like reviewing the progress on monthly basis during theRPM meeting, sharing of list of villages which are at the stage of under energisation with the state Discom, identifying the villages where milestone progress are delayed.
