Consumer Price Index Numbers on Base 2012=100 for Rural, Urban and Combined for the Month of February 2015

The Central Statistics Office (CSO), Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation has revised the Base Year of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) from 2010=100 to 2012=100 with effect from the release of indices for the month of January 2015.
2. In this press note, the CPI (Rural, Urban, Combined) on Base 2012=100 is being released for the month of February 2015. In addition to this, Consumer Food Price Index (CFPI) for all India Rural, Urban and Combined, separately, are also being released for February 2015. Inflation rates (on point to point basis i.e. February, 2015 over February 2014), based on General Indices and CFPIs are given as follows:
3. Provisional indices for the month of February 2015 and also the final indices for January 2015 are being released with this note for all-India and for State/UTs. All-India provisional General (all- groups), Group and Sub-group level CPI and CFPI numbers of February, 2015 for Rural, Urban and Combined are given in Annexure I. The General Indices (Provisional) for the month of February 2015 for Rural, Urban and Combined are 120.6, 118.7 and 119.7, respectively. The CFPI for Rural, Urban and Combined for the same month are 122.4, 123.0 and 122.6 respectively. The inflation rates of important categories of items are given in Annexure II.
4. State/UT-wise General provisional CPI numbers for Rural, Urban and Combined are given in Annexure III. State/UT – wise Group CPIs are available on the Ministry’s website (www.mospi.gov.in).
5. Price data are collected from selected towns by the Field Operations Division of NSSO and from selected villages by the Department of Posts. Price data are received through web portals, maintained by the National Informatics Centre.

Quick Estimates of Index of Industrial Production and Use-Based Index for the Month of January, 2015 (Base 2004-05=100)

The Quick Estimates of Index of Industrial Production (IIP) with base 2004-05 for the month of January 2015 have been released by the Central Statistics Office of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation. IIP is compiled using data received from 16 source agencies viz. Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion (DIPP); Indian Bureau of Mines; Central Electricity Authority; Joint Plant Committee; Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas; Office of Textile Commissioner; Department of Chemicals & Petrochemicals; Directorate of Sugar; Department of Fertilizers; Directorate of Vanaspati, Vegetable Oils & Fats; Tea Board; Office of Jute Commissioner; Office of Coal Controller; Railway Board; Office of Salt Commissioner and Coffee Board.
2. The General Index for the month of January 2015 stands at 188.7, which is 2.6% higher as compared to the level in the month of January 2014. The cumulative growth for the period April-January 2014-15 over the corresponding period of the previous year stands at 2.5%.
3. The Indices of Industrial Production for the Mining, Manufacturing and Electricity sectors for the month of January 2015 stand at 135.3, 200.5 and 175.8 respectively, with the corresponding growth rates of (-) 2.8%, 3.3% and 2.7% as compared to January 2014 (Statement I). The cumulative growth in the three sectors during April-January 2014-15 over the corresponding period of 2013-14 has been 1.3%, 1.7% and 9.3% respectively.
4. In terms of industries, fourteen (14) out of the twenty two (22) industry groups (as per 2-digit NIC-2004) in the manufacturing sec tor have shown positive growth during the month of January 2015 as compared to the corresponding month of the previous year (St atement II). The industry group ‘Electrical machinery and apparatus n.e.c.’ has shown the highest positive growth of 28.1%, followed by 23.5% in ‘Furniture; manufacturing n.e.c.’ and 15.3% in ‘Rubber and plastics products’. On the other hand, the industry group ‘Radio, TV and communication equipment & apparatus’ has shown the highest negative growth of (-) 51.3%, followed by (-) 35.1% in ‘Office, accounting & computing machinery’ and (-) 9.7% in ‘Fabricated metal products, except machinery & equipment’.
5. As per Use-based classification, the growth rates in January 2015 over January 2014 are 4.5% in Basic goods, 12.8% in Capital goods and (-) 0.8% in Intermediate goods (Statement III). The Consumer durables and Consumer non-durables have recorded growth of (-) 5.3% and (-) 0.1% respectively, with the overall growth in Consumer goods being (-) 1.9%.
6. Some of the important items showing high positive growth during the current month over the same month in previous year include ‘H R Sheets’ (343.0%), ‘Polythene bags including HDPE & LDPE bags’ (161.6%), ‘Woollen Carpets’ (84.5%), ‘Conductor, Aluminium’ (69.7%), ‘Stainless/ alloy steel’ (68.5%), ‘Gems and Jewellery’ (44.4%), ‘Plastic Machinery including Moulding Machinery’ (41.1%), ‘PVC Pipes and Tubes’ (41.0%), ‘Cable, Rubber Insulated’ (39.5%), ‘Carbon Steel’ (29.4%), ‘Rice’ (25.6%), ‘Air Conditioner (Room)’ (23.4%) and ‘Boilers’ (20.8%).
7. Some of the other important items showing high negative growth are: ‘Electric Sheets’ [(-) 61.5%], ‘Telephone Instruments (incl. Mobile Phones & Accessories)’ [(-) 57.9%], ‘Heat Exchangers’ [(-) 44.4%], ‘Ship Building & Repairs’ [(-) 42.0%], ‘Tractors (complete)’ [(-) 40.6%], ‘Computers’ [(-) 39.7%], ‘Steel Structures’ [(-) 34.2%], ‘Generator/ Alternator’ [(-) 23.4%], ‘Wood Furniture’ [(-) 22.7%] and ‘Colour TV Sets’ [(-) 20.6%].
8. However, growth rates in respect of individual items may not reflect their actual contribution in the overall growth rate of IIP. Taking into account the weights of different items, the overall growth rate of IIP can be decomposed into positive and negative contributions of different items. Such contributions of top five items with positive contribution and top five items with negative contribution are given below:

9. Along with the Quick Estimates of IIP for the month of January 2015, the indices for December 2014 have undergone the first revision and those for October 2014 have undergone the final revision in the light of the updated data received from the source agencies. It may be noted that these revised indices (first revision) in respect of December 2014 shall undergo final (second) revision along with the release of IIP for the month of March 2015.
10. Statements giving Quick Estimates of the Index of Industrial Production at Sectoral, 2-digit level of National Industrial Classification (NIC-2004) and by Use-based classification for the month of January 2015, along with the growth rates over the corresponding month of previous year, including the cumulative indices and growth rates, are enclosed.
Release of the index for February 2015 will be on Friday, 10 April 2015.
